UNITED STATES WITHDRAWAL FROM PARIS AGREEMENT

On the heels of a contentious summit with G7 partners dated on 1 June 2017, President Trump announced that he will pull the United States out from the landmark Paris climate accord, the global agreement to battle climate change that 195 countries signed on to in December 2015.

The United States will join only two other countries - Syria and Nicaragua - as non-participants, the action that weakening efforts to combat global warming and embracing isolationist voices in his White House who argued that the agreement was a pernicious threat to the economy and American sovereignty.

This is a grave mistake that hurts the whole world not only America, and will isolate United States from the global coalition to fight the central environmental challenge of our time. Indeed, United States withdrawal from the climate agreement will turn us into a global pariah and destroy our international credibility, and will threaten not just its environment but also its national security , as its economy also stands to take a hit: Trump's decision puts more than a million clean energy jobs at risk. In signing the Paris climate agreement, the United States, the second-largest polluter on the planet, committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 26 percent to 28 percent in a decade, and its withdrawal from the agreement will undo years of progress made toward achieving that goal.

The Paris agreement was intended to bind the world community into battling rising temperatures in concert, and the departure of the Earth's second-largest polluter is a major blow, as Under the accord, the United States had pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025 and commit up to $3 billion in aid for poorer countries by 2020.

Afro Asian People's Solidarity Organization sees that Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement is a grave mistake against humanity and consider this reckless action as a remarkable rebuke to heads of states and the international community and climate activist.
